The Hephaestus Chair is for a craftsperson. Its function is a chair for working, one that has built-in storage and can be used both at a table or as a stand alone seat. The chair’s design is built around its internal architecture. The vertical supports are perfect 45/45/90 triangles which have a seat cut out of them that is a smaller, but same-angled, triangle. Building this chair around such an inherently strong shape gives it the stability and durability to withstand a lot of use. The corners of the chair have been cut at angles, exposing the corrugation of the cardboard which highlights the material.
Hephaestus is the Greek god of blacksmiths, metalworking, carpenters, craftsmen, artisans, and sculptors. This chair is designed for the same, and its built-in storage for crafting materials, along with its upright ergonomic design, make it a tool that can be used for hours at a time.
The Hephaestus Chair was constructed entirely out of corrugated cardboard and glue for Design: Object and Environment at Connecticut College, 2022.
